Route

The route is illustrative and we adapt it to the characteristics of the group, the day and the time at which it begins.

Throughout this visit we will talk about the three main aspects that have influenced the history of Pamplona-Iruña: the defensive walls, the Camino de Santiago and the San Fermin Festival.

We begin the walking tour in the Plaza del Castillo, the center of the Old Town and a usual meeting point for the people of Pamplona. Afterwards we will continue talking about the running of the bulls and the San Fermín Festival. We will see the Plaza de Toros, and the famous Estafeta street. We access the highest part of the city where the Cathedral of Santa María la Real is located, a Gothic building from the 15th century ordered to be built by King Charles the III the Noble.

We will take a look over the walls of the northern part of the city, in the Baluarte del Redín. In this way we enter the ancient history of Pamplona. Roman foundation on a Basque town in the year 75 BC, Capital of the Kingdom of Navarra, until its conquest by the Castilians in 1512.

At the Portal de Francia, an old gate in the city walls, we see the entrance to the Camino de Santiago and its route along the Rúa de los Peregrinos. Following the Camino de Santiago we reach the City Hall. Its baroque façade was built in 1756. It is known worldwide because it is here from where the famous chupinazo is launched that begins the San Fermín Festival. There we will learn the history of the three towns that formed the city in the Middle Ages.

Nearby is the Church of San Saturnino, where the patron saint of the city is located. It is a beautiful example of 13th century Gothic style, with a large baroque chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Camino.

We continue the route of the Camino along Calle Mayor to visit the Chapel of San Fermín in the Church of San Lorenzo. We will finish in the Taconera gardens.
