Pamplona is a city marked by its medieval period. Capital of the Kingdom of Navarre, stop on the Way of Saint James… Even the festivals of San Fermín originated during this time. Wars and plagues, kings and bishops, nobility and bourgeoisie, castles and palaces. The three old burgs, the “Unification privilege”, the Way of Saint James, walls and moats. During this tour we will unveil the Pamplona from the Middle Ages, we will focus in this period of time.

Route

The route is illustrative and we adapt it to the characteristics of the group, the day and the time at which it begins.

We will start with a brief introduction to the History of Pamplona. We will speak about the origin of the city, with the vascons (basque people), romans and the beginning of the Middle Ages.

Afterwards, we will head towards the Cathedral of Pamplona(exterior). We will speak about the old burgs during the Middle Ages, starting with the oldest part of the city and the 16th city walls that are still standing.

At the Gate of France we will cover the Way of Saint James and its importance during the Middle Ages for the city. We will walk over the walls until the Archive of Navarre, the old Palace of the Kings of Navarre.

In front of our City Hall we will explain the “Unification Privilege” and its impact in the city. We will also visit some hidden gems of the Middle Ages, like the Belena de Portalapea, Saint Saturnin Church and the Constable Palace

Next, we will see the “Cámara de Comptos Reales”, oldest civil building in use of the city, the “New Street”, where a moat separated two of the old burgs, the Church of Saint Nicholas, and finish at Castle Square.
