Pamplona is worldwide known for the festivals of San Fermín. This festivals originated in the Middle Ages, and became famous all around the world due to the writer Ernest Hemingway.
In this walking tour we will visit the most important places of the festivals, as the route of the Running of the Bulls or City Hall square. We will talk about the History of the festivals and the culture and traditions involved.
We can end our tour visiting the bullring of Pamplona or taking pictures at a photocall as if you were “running with the bulls”.
The origin of the festivals of San Fermín was a livestock fair of the Middle Ages, organized at the beginning of July. It was the most important fair of the Kingdom of Navarre, and during it bullfights were celebrated, at least from the 14th century.

Route
The route is illustrative and we adapt it to the characteristics of the group, the day and the time at which it begins.
We will begin our tour at the church of Saint Lawrence, where the Chapel of San Fermín and its image, that goes on procession every July 7, is located.
From the city walls, we’ll see the “Corralillos del Gas”. These are the bullpens where all the bulls that will run during the festivals are gathered. From there, we’ll head to the bullpens of Santo Domingo. That’s where the six bulls that take part in the daily Bull Run spend the night. We’ll walk the 850 meters to the bullring. Along the way, we’ll stop at City Hall Square, where the festival begins every July 6 with the “Chupinazo” firework. On July 14, the people of Pamplona gather in the same place with lit candles to bid farewell to the festival.
We will also see the Monument to the Running of the Bulls and the Monument to Hemingway, as well as Plaza del Castillo, the main square of Pamplona where the famous Café Iruña is located. This historical Café was visited and loved by Ernest Hemingway, and it appears in his novel “The Sun Also Rises”.
During the tour, our guides will share facts and interesting anecdotes about the San Fermin Festivals and the Running of the Bulls. They will explain our traditions, for example, why we wear red and white, tell you about the Chupinazo, and why all the kids of the city are in love with the Giants and Bigheads.
